Armenia, Russia discuss life extension of Metsamor nuclear plantApril 26, 2024 - 13:14 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Issues regarding the extension of life of the 2nd power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant were discussed by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan and Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin. According to the press service of the Ministry, the two weighed in on issues related to infrastructure development and interregional cooperation, as well as topics of bilateral interest. On December 15, 2023, Yerevan and Moscow signed a framework contract for the implementation of a set of measures to re-extend the life of the 2nd power unit of the Armenian NPP. The deadline is expected to be extended until 2036. The current 2nd power unit of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant was launched in 1980. By the decision of the Armenian government adopted in 2024, the operating life of the Armenian nuclear power plant will be extended for the second time. Since the current operational life ends in 2026, extension work should be completed by then, with an eye to ensuring that the station operates for at least another 10 years.
