MELKONIAN ARMENIAN LYCEUM TO CLOSE IN CYPRUS IN JUNE 2005
By the resolution of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), the Melkonian Armenian Lyceum will be closed in Cyprus in June 2005. A conclusion that the education institution does not fulfill the entrusted mission of developing knowledge of the pupils and acquainting them with moral values served as basis for such a decision of the AGBU. Being opened in 1926, the establishment originally had a humanitarian mission, providing shelter to children, who became orphans resulting from the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey. Instead of the Lyceum the AGBU will support a secondary school for Armenian children of Cyprus and plans to found Melkonian Youth Center in Armenia to provide young representatives of the Armenian Diaspora an opportunity to visit their historical fatherland.
