POST-WAR UPSET OF POWER BALANCE IN REGION PREGNANT WITH UNFORESEEN CONSEQUENCES FOR ARMENIA, RUSSIAN POLITICAL SCIENTIST SUPPOSES

PanARMENIAN.Net - The war in Iraq can develop into a general destabilization of the situation in the region, which may have fateful consequences for Armenia. Russian political scientist Andranik Mihranian told "Arminfo" agency. In his words, there is a real threat of collapse of the Iraqi statehood and destabilization of the situation in Turkey, which can entail unforeseen events in Iran. "If the US continues getting back at the countries of the so-called "axis of evil," power imbalance in the region will become likely, which can have unforeseen consequences for Armenia," - A. Mihranian supposes. He explained his opinion that the advantages and achievements of the Armenian policy rested on maintained balance in the unstable region. "The US, Russia, Iran and Turkey formed a situation, which let Armenia keep natural relations with the US and European countries, as well as Iran and Russia. The probable complication of the situation in Iran, limiting opportunities for Russia and destabilization of the situation in Turkey may set such tasks for Armenia, which it might not be able to solve without assistance," - the political scientist emphasized. He considered that it was not casual that Armenia supported European countries and Russia in demanding for the soonest possible cessation of the military actions in Iraq and the return to the discussion of the issue at the UN Security Council. Thus, A. Mihranian stressed, maintaining the low profile in the issue, i.e. not showing active support of the military actions and not sharply condemning the actions of the anti-Iraqi coalition, the Armenian diplomacy took a very convenient and balanced stand, as in case of any developments Armenia will not find itself isolated.
