2% growth reported in SCR cargo traffic in Q1 2012

The volume of South Caucasus Railways (SCR) cargo traffic in January – April totaled 898.5 thousand tons, growing by 2% compared with the same period in 2011.

In the first four months SCR transported 133.3 thousand tons of cargo in export which exceeds last year’s index by 21.6%.

The volume of cargo in import traffic amounted to 342.7 thousand tons, decreasing by 12,4% compared with the same period of 2011. The railway transported 422.5 thousand tons of cargo in the local traffic during the reporting period 2012

It is noteworthy that according to statistical data, the train increased the average weight of freight volume to 1436 tons against last year’s 1343 tons.

In April 2012 the volume of SCR freight traffic grew by 3.1 %, compared with the period, 2011. Mainly non-ferrous ore (4.9 thousand tons), ferrous metal scrap (4.7 thousand tons), and cement (3.9 thousand tons) were recorded in export traffic of the cargo nomenclature. Sugar (25.6 thousand tons), grain cargoes (18.3 thousand tons), oil products (16.2 thousand tons), chemical and mineral fertilizers (4.5 thousand tons) prevailed in import traffic of April 2012. Non-ferrous ores (98.5 tons), construction materials (33.5 thousand tons) corn and grain weights (4.1 thousand tons) were particularly reported in the local traffic.

The railway is gradually increasing key performance indicators, including the volume of freight traffic, according to a press release.
