Italy vs. "Franco-German" Alliance on Turkish EU Membership

PanARMENIAN.Net - "Italy gives you a guarantee of full support in negotiations for European Union membership," said Italian Foreign Minister Famiano Crucianelli in Ankara during his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. In his words, Prodi's statement that "there is no change in Italian policy on that subject" was interpreted by Ankara to mean support from Rome for the so-called "Franco-German" alliance against Turkish EU membership. Famiano Crucianelli said that the Italian Prime Minister Prodi was misunderstood, the Hurriyet reports.
