This summer's Olympics in Rio could play host to as many tech and broadcasting feats as sporting achievements, Digital Spy said.
The games will be partially filmed in 8K 'Super-Hi Vision' for the two people in Japan with the $140,000 televisions that support the resolution.
Around 130 hours of footage will be shot in the next-generation standard, including the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the most popular sports, reports Advanced Television.
Moreover, the Olympic Broadcasting Services is trialling '3D 22.2 channel surround sound' at Rio, which should make the events more immersive for anyone lucky enough to own the necessary kit.
This year's Olympics will also be broadcast in a virtual reality-optimised format, which will be more accessible to the masses given the rate that VR headsets and viewers are gaining traction. Again, this will be limited to the bookend ceremonies and most popular sports.
Anyone without a VR headset or super-powered Japanese TV will just have to watch the games in good old 1080p, Digital Spy said.
