Azerbaijan opens 18 bursts of fire along Armenia border![]() April 16, 2016 - 11:36 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - 18 random bursts of gunfire were registered on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the latter using various caliber firearms and sniper rifles to shoot at Armenian positions. A 60-mm mortar was also used in the ceasefire violations on the night of April 15-16. Showing restraint, the Armenian Armed Forces’ frontline positions retaliated only in case of extreme necessity to continue controlling the situation on the border. On the night of April 14-15, 14 ceasefire violations were registered in the northeastern section of Armenia-Azerbaijan border. The Azerbaijani side, in particular, opened random bursts of gunfire from various caliber firearms. ![]() ![]() The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now. ![]() ![]() As a result of floods in Armenia’s northern Lori and Tavush provinces, 17 bridges, including five large ones, have collapsed.
