Azeri economist: Railway to Turkey through Armenia could cost $434m

PanARMENIAN.Net - Building a railway between Azerbaijan and Turkey through the territory of Armenia is estimated to cost $434 million, according to Vusal Gasimli, the Executive director of the Center for Economic Reforms Analysis and Communication of Azerbaijan.

Gasimli was referring to the proposed Kars-Nakhichevan-Meghri-Zangelan-Baku railway, which would connect Nakhichevan with Azerbaijan.

He noted that Armenia, using the potential of Azerbaijan, can establish transport communication with Russia in two directions – Gyumri-Nakhichevan-Meghri-Baku and Ijevan-Gazakh-Baku.

“Given that rail communication from Kars to Gyumri can also be established, then, according to foreign sources, the cost of the railway construction project Kars-Gyumri-Nakhichevan-Meghri-Baku will amount to about $434 million,” Gasimli said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday, January 11 met with Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on Moscow. The three signed a statement on their plans to unblock transport and economic communications in the region.
