The Azerbaijani armed forces have occupied about 127 square kilometers of the territory of the Republic of Armenia in the past one year, lawmaker from the ruling Civil Contract party Armen Khachatryan has said, according to the Armenian service of RFE/RL.
"The adversary took control of about 127 square kilometers of the border area of the Republic of Armenia in 2021-2022," said the deputy.
Khachatryan is the first official to publish such a figure without providing details. Prior to that, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that as a result of the September 13 attack, Azerbaijan occupied 10 square kilometers, and in 2021 - 41.
The latest round of fighting between the two countries began in the wee hours of September 13, when the Azerbaijani military attacked Armenian posts and shelled Armenian settlements both on the border and deep behind the frontline. More than 200 people are dead or missing as a result, the Security Council of Armenia said several days after the attack.
