This work is being done as part of preparations to extend the operation of the plant's second power unit until 2036. According to a statement from Rosatom's press service, specialists from the corporation are involved in the inspection, the main goal of which is to assess the possibility of safely and reliably storing radioactive waste at the Armenian NPP site during the next operational period of the plant. Based on the results of the inspection, the experts will prepare a report on the feasibility and timelines for the continued use of the storage facility. The Armenian NPP supplies about one-third of the country's total energy needs.
