MEP: Armenia makes sovereign EU membership decision

European Parliament member Nathalie Loiseau stated that Armenia’s aspiration to join the European Union is not surprising, emphasizing that Armenia has made a sovereign decision. She added that she would support a positive EU response if Armenia officially confirms its candidacy.

As reported by Armenpress, Loiseau’s remarks addressed the Armenian government’s January 9 decision to approve the draft law "On initiating the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union."

“The European Union’s model is remarkably attractive. In a time when authoritarian regimes are attacking the rules-based international order, the EU shines as a beacon of democracy and the rule of law, despite its imperfections. It is no surprise that Armenia seeks to join the EU, given its choice for peace, democracy, and reform. I will support a positive EU response if Armenia confirms its candidacy,” Loiseau stated.

The MEP stressed that Armenia is a sovereign state that makes decisions based on the interests of its people.

"Armenia is a sovereign country. Yerevan makes decisions necessary to protect the interests of the Armenian people. The European Union has never forced any country to join or remain. I wish that the former USSR and today’s Russian Federation could draw inspiration from our respect for the independence and sovereignty of third countries," Loiseau said.

On January 9, Armenia’s government approved the draft law “On initiating the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union,” which is expected to be discussed in the Armenian parliament.
