Opposition MP calls Armenia's EU accession agenda “false, reckless”![]() January 23, 2025 - 15:49 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Artsvik Minasyan, Secretary of the "Armenia" parliamentary faction, described the agenda for Armenia's EU accession as “false and reckless.” He made this statement during a parliamentary briefing. According to him, this “reckless policy” aims to divide society. “They were not content with dividing people into black and white, former and current, Karabakh residents and Armenians from Armenia. Now they are creating a new division and confrontation line to prevent the Armenian people from uniting to solve security issues,” Minasyan stated, as reported by Aysor.am . The MP also addressed the legal justifications for the EU accession document, calling it a “legal absurdity.” “This type of law cannot be adopted because it is not a law and cannot be considered one. At most, it could be treated as a declaration. The parliamentary expert commission has also reached this conclusion. If they truly want to pursue this path, they can reject the initiative, and the initiators can gather another 300,000 signatures. Then let the Constitutional Court decide whether this proposal can become a law or not,” he explained. Minasyan noted that their faction previously supported the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), as it has fostered the development of relations with the EU and expanded cooperation mechanisms since the 2000s. “It is, in essence, the most practical ‘both-and’ document. Instead, the current authorities and their supporters are pushing forward a false agenda, which, under today’s global geopolitical developments, could lead to even heavier consequences,” he warned. On January 9, the Armenian government approved a draft proposal to begin the process of joining the European Union, introduced by the Eurovote civil initiative. The draft will soon be discussed in Armenia's parliament. The European Union will analyze the draft approved by Armenia’s government and discuss it with Armenian authorities, according to Anita Hipper, the EU’s spokesperson for external relations and security. Russia’s presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov and Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk have stated that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the EU is incompatible, as both unions require the absence of customs borders and free movement of goods, services, and labor. ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution. President of the Armenian parliament Alen Simonyan met with the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova. ![]() ![]() Partner news | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
