Pope Francis could resign due to health issues

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi has not ruled out the possibility that Pope Francis may step down if his health prevents him from fulfilling his duties.

On February 14, after concluding his audiences, the 88-year-old pontiff was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Clinic for medical examinations and continued treatment for bronchitis under hospital care. As a result, events involving him were canceled. Later, tests revealed the early stages of bilateral pneumonia, according to RIA Novosti.

"I think so. If he encounters serious difficulties in carrying out his duties, he will make his choice. Of course, the decision will be his alone; he may seek advice, but ultimately, he will make the final call according to his conscience," Ravasi told Corriere della Sera when asked whether Francis might abdicate.
