Armenia aligns over 30 laws with EU legislation

Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan announced that Armenia has harmonized over 30 legislative drafts with European Union standards. She emphasized the country's significant progress in human rights and justice sectors during recent EU-Armenia dialogues.

Galyan detailed steps to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, noting that constitutional reforms are underway, with a new Constitution expected by the 2026 elections. She highlighted electoral reforms focusing on equal participation for individuals with disabilities and improvements in political party financing.

The minister also discussed the development of a dedicated institution for personal data protection and ongoing legislative efforts concerning national minorities. Collaboration with parliamentary committees aims to enhance judicial accessibility, including mechanisms to assist individuals with disabilities regarding state duties.

Galyan affirmed Armenia's commitment to implementing European Court of Human Rights decisions and introduced a methodological guide for investigating discrimination and hate crimes, soon to be distributed to law enforcement agencies.

The Justice Academy continues to provide training for investigators, prosecutors, judges, and candidates, with plans to develop a strategy emphasizing equality and anti-discrimination efforts. Digitalization initiatives and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms are also being advanced within judicial reforms.

Regarding penitentiary and probation services, Galyan outlined plans for a new prison system focusing on modern standards and professional staff, emphasizing the importance of restorative justice and enhancing probation service capabilities.

The session also addressed the new EU-Armenia partnership agenda, the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, EU support for Armenia's resilience through economic, trade, and energy cooperation, and regional and global security challenges, including Armenia's relations with neighboring countries.
