Baku insists on 'fair trial' amid UN concerns

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Aykhan Hajizade, responded to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who called for the immediate release of arbitrarily detained Armenians in Azerbaijan.

Hajizade stated that evaluating peace efforts “should not obscure the full picture,” according to Trend.

A representative of a country known for torturing prisoners spoke of “fair trials” and the “rule of law.”

“A fair trial, in line with international legal standards, is crucial for uncovering the truth, ensuring justice for victims, and upholding the rule of law. Only through truth and healing can peace and reconciliation overcome impunity,” Hajizade said.

On March 3, during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk addressed the issue of all arbitrarily detained individuals in Azerbaijan, including Armenians, in his comprehensive report.

"They must be released immediately, and their right to a fair trial must be fully respected," he emphasized.

Türk also noted that he is closely monitoring peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, expressing hope that they will "lead to truth, healing, and reconciliation," and stating his willingness to support the process.
