Armenian activist starts hunger strike at UN office

Levik Khachatryan, a member of the "Kamq" initiative, has begun an indefinite hunger strike in front of the UN office, Aysor.am reports.

His demand is for international organizations and major powers to use all available means to end torture and mistreatment in Azerbaijan.

A hunger strike and sit-in continue at Freedom Square in support of Ruben Vardanyan, the former State Minister of Artsakh, who is unlawfully held captive in Baku. Mane Tandilyan, co-founder of the "Country to Live" party, along with Vardan Avagyan and Artavazd Lalayan, have been on a hunger strike for four consecutive days, urging Vardanyan to stop his protest.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing that it continues to draw international attention to the issue of Armenian prisoners of war, hostages, and other detainees in Azerbaijan. The statement also condemned the staged trials against some detainees, which involve gross procedural violations and visible signs of torture.

Human rights defender Siranush Sahakyan stated that photos of former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan reveal visible injuries on his body. Vardanyan has been on a hunger strike for a week. During his last court session, his condition deteriorated sharply, and photos taken during the hearing showed facial injuries. Despite this, the court forced him to attend the session. His international lawyer recently detailed his health condition, warning that his life is at serious risk.
