MEP urges action on Armenian detainees![]() March 7, 2025 - 18:53 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Luxembourg's representative in the European Parliament, Fernand Kartheiser, has addressed a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, expressing deep concern over the detention conditions of Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenians held in Baku. In his letter, Kartheiser emphasized that Vardanyan's current situation is alarming. As a member of the European Parliament, he highlighted urgent issues related to Vardanyan's detention and trial, noting that they do not meet international legal standards. Kartheiser also pointed out that Vardanyan's hunger strike has further heightened concerns, as his deteriorating health poses a serious threat to his life. "Alongside Mr. Vardanyan, 22 other Armenians are detained in Azerbaijan, with their rights being violated. Their detention contradicts international legal norms. Given the gravity of the situation, I would be deeply grateful for your support in this matter. I am confident that concrete steps by the EU can significantly aid these detained individuals. There is growing concern that they may be used as hostages," Kartheiser wrote, urging Kallas to consider intervening for the immediate release of the Armenian detainees and subsequently supporting their safe return to Armenia. The parliamentarian concluded his letter by noting that this issue is directly related to the existing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He expressed deep hope that the EU will continue to support the improvement of these relations and promote the protection of Armenia's rights and security, considering the risk of renewed violence in the region. As of now, Azerbaijan has officially confirmed holding 23 Armenian detainees, including former Nagorno-Karabakh presidents Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, and Arayik Harutyunyan; former state minister Ruben Vardanyan; former commander of the defense army Levon Mnatsakanyan; former deputy commander of the defense army Davit Manukyan; and former foreign minister Davit Babayan.
