Armenia eyes deeper transport cooperation with India, Iran

During his speech at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) in New Delhi, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that Armenia is highly interested in the North-South International Transport Corridor and the Chabahar Port development project, stressing the need to enhance cooperation.

"The removal of obstacles to the free movement of goods and services is essential for addressing the structural limitations of landlocked developing countries and fostering their integration into the global market. Expanding connectivity is key to achieving this goal. Armenia is deeply committed to promoting dialogue and cooperation within the North-South International Transport Corridor and the Chabahar Port development initiatives. In this regard, the Armenia-India-Iran trilateral cooperation format is of great significance, and I am pleased that we have already launched this mechanism and begun practical discussions," Mirzoyan stated, according to the Foreign Ministry.

He acknowledged that while economic activity is growing, it has not yet reached the desired levels.

"Our goal is to significantly increase bilateral trade volumes in the coming years by focusing on creating opportunities for Armenian companies to establish business ties with India. This ambition was at the core of discussions during the recent session of the Intergovernmental Commission in Yerevan. As the Armenian co-chair, I am committed to prioritizing this effort by strengthening institutional engagement and fostering business-to-government (B2G) and business-to-business (B2B) interactions.

I believe that our expert communities can contribute to these efforts with in-depth analyses and recommendations that can bring our business circles closer together," the minister added.

Mirzoyan also highlighted the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, emphasizing high technology, IT, education, science, tourism, aviation, logistics, and pharmaceuticals as particularly promising areas.

"Tourism is a key sector of cooperation that not only brings economic benefits but also enhances mobility and people-to-people connections, fostering mutual understanding. We are actively working on establishing direct flights between Yerevan and Delhi.

In the green energy sector, cooperation opens new opportunities by combining Armenia’s potential with India’s expertise. In 2024, Armenia joined the International Solar Alliance, a joint initiative of India and France, which presents fresh prospects for collaboration.

In digital transformation, Armenia and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023 on exchanging population-scale digital solutions. During this visit, we plan to sign an agreement on cooperation in medical product regulation," Mirzoyan concluded.

Chabahar Port, located in southern Iran, serves as a vital trade hub. India has invested significantly in its modernization to strengthen trade links between Asia and the Caucasus.
