During his official visit to India, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan told WION news outlet that Armenia is open to recruiting workers from India, but only in a way that ensures compatibility with both the country’s economy and labor market.

He emphasized that the discussion concerns legal migration.

“We see increasing demand for Armenia, but this is an area that must be regulated. We had the opportunity to exchange views on this issue with Minister Jaishankar,” Mirzoyan noted.

According to him, regulation should not only define how many workers can migrate but also ensure that their rights are protected.

Mirzoyan also addressed the growing number of Indian students in Armenia, mainly in medical fields, but noted that opportunities are not limited to medicine.

“For more than a decade—several decades, in fact—we have seen growing interest, and we are eager to maintain and expand student exchanges from India. At the same time, I am certain that Indian universities offer programs that may interest Armenian students. So, we should likely intensify our efforts in this area,” he said.

According to Armenia’s Migration and Citizenship Service, labor migration from India requires regulation, as 80% of Indian workers in Armenia currently lack legal status. Employers apply for work permits for only a few thousand workers, while the total number of Indian labor migrants is estimated at 17,000–18,000.
