Law enforcement agencies have detained the father and son of Martun Grigoryan, a candidate for mayor of Gyumri, and transported them to Yerevan, according to Aysor.am .
It has been revealed that Grigoryan’s father, Kamo Grigoryan, was arrested for spreading construction gravel.
Local sources in Gyumri report that the elderly Kamo Grigoryan was jailed for placing gravel in one of the neighborhoods several months ago at a relative’s request. This reportedly occurred even before the start of the election campaign.
Hayk Mamijanyan, leader of the “I Have Honor” parliamentary faction, described the situation in Gyumri as political repression, alleging that law enforcement had raided the offices of Martun Grigoryan and other candidates.
According to Mamijanyan, the search of Grigoryan’s campaign office was also linked to the gravel incident, as reported by Pastinfo.
“Dear people, literally the same thing done by Civil Contract candidate Sarik Minasyan—spreading gravel on one or two streets—is now the basis for trying to arrest Martun Grigoryan’s father and son. Exactly the same action,” Mamijanyan said.
He emphasized that while the ruling party speaks of democracy, it is in fact targeting opposition members with repressive measures.
“Let’s make this clear: they talk about democracy, yet they’re currently repressing two members of the ‘I Have Honor’ faction. They’ve come after Taron Margaryan’s immunity, and now they’re trying to arrest Martun Grigoryan’s father and son,” he stated.
Mamijanyan also addressed Sarik Minasyan, the ruling party’s mayoral candidate, warning that after the elections he would still have to live in the same city.
“After the elections, he will remain in this city. People in Gyumri are known for their sense of honor. Bringing people from Yerevan and having your own citizens arrested—how do you intend to lead the city that way? I don’t know how he plans to walk around Gyumri afterward. And I’m sure that on March 30, after all of this, the people of Gyumri will deliver their verdict,” he said.
Mamijanyan added that Gyumri is already rejecting the ruling Civil Contract party, and that trend is visible both online and on the streets.
“It’s noticeable on social media and in public spaces. Many in Gyumri now see it as unacceptable to vote for Civil Contract. A vote for Sarik is a vote for Civil Contract and Nikol Pashinyan. Sarik Minasyan has effectively endorsed the use of the regime’s repressive apparatus,” Mamijanyan stated.
Municipal elections in Gyumri and Parakar are scheduled for March 30.
