Kazakh President hails Armenia-Azerbaijan draft agreement

PanARMENIAN.Net - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on a draft agreement between Yerevan and Baku aimed at establishing peace and interstate relations.

According to Kazinform, Tokayev made the statement during a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

Tokayev emphasized the importance of Mirzoyan’s official visit to Astana—the first in his capacity as Armenia’s Foreign Minister—for advancing bilateral cooperation, Armenpress reported.

He also expressed Kazakhstan’s warm attitude toward the Armenian people and the Republic of Armenia.

The Kazakh leader noted that signing the peace agreement could mark a significant stage in the process of establishing lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He believes it would also stimulate regional security and enhance cooperation both for Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries.

On March 13, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced that the draft of a peace agreement had been finalized, effectively concluding negotiations on the matter. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, proposing to begin consultations on the date and venue of the agreement’s signing. However, Baku continues to impose preconditions for signing. Specifically, Azerbaijan insists that Armenia amend its Constitution, claiming it contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan. A second precondition is the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
