Steinmeier promises mediation for Armenian POWs release

PanARMENIAN.Net - Catholicos Garegin II has asked German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to raise the issue of Armenian prisoners of war, the rights of the people of Artsakh, and the protection of Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage during his upcoming visit to Azerbaijan.

On April 1, President Steinmeier, accompanied by his wife, visited the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin as part of his official trip to Armenia.

Catholicos Garegin II emphasized that the consistent international advocacy for these matters is essential for ensuring just resolutions, achieving lasting peace in the region, and fostering peaceful coexistence among its peoples, according to the Mother See's Information Service.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity to visit one of Christianity’s ancient sanctuaries, President Steinmeier underlined the importance of religion in promoting peace and harmony among nations. He assured that he would use his mediation efforts to support the establishment of lasting peace in the region.

The Catholicos also reflected on the trials endured by the Armenian people throughout history, including the Genocide of the early 20th century, stating that the nation would overcome recent crises with the same faith and resilience.

The meeting concluded with the Catholicos and the German president offering prayers before the Holy Altar of Etchmiadzin for global peace and human well-being.

At the end of the visit, President Steinmeier, accompanied by Bishop Serovbe Isakhanyan, head of the Armenian Diocese in Germany, toured the recently renovated cathedral and learned about its historical significance.
