The trial of former Artsakh political and military leaders on charges brought by Azerbaijan resumed on April 21 at the Baku Military Court. The next hearing is scheduled for April 24.
During the April 21 session, the defendants were questioned about the events in Khojaly in February 1992. According to Azerbaijani media, former Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan, former Foreign Minister Davit Babayan, Arkadi Ghukasyan, and others stated they did not participate in or have detailed knowledge of the Khojaly events.
Former President Arayik Harutyunyan reportedly described the Khojaly events as “the greatest tragedy of the First Karabakh War”.
Arkadi Ghukasyan stated that at the time of the Khojaly events, Artsakh was led by Artur Mkrtchyan, military operations were commanded by Arkadi Ter-Tadevosyan (Komandos), and the formation of self-defense forces was overseen by Serzh Sargsyan.
Azerbaijani official propaganda accuses Armenians of massacring Khojaly's civilian population. However, even Azerbaijan's then-President Ayaz Mutalibov acknowledged in March 1992 that Armenians had left a corridor for civilians to flee, and that Azerbaijani forces near Aghdam had sufficient strength to assist them. Those Khojaly residents who did not leave the village surrendered to Armenian forces voluntarily and without preconditions.
The Artsakh Rescue Service discovered the bodies of 11 Azerbaijani civilians in Khojaly and its surroundings. Hundreds of other civilians were killed 10–11 km from the village, near Aghdam, where Azerbaijani military units were stationed.
