Aram I: clarity, unity needed between Armenia and Diaspora

PanARMENIAN.Net - In a message marking the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia emphasized the urgency of national unity and coordination between Armenia and the Diaspora, while reaffirming the centrality of the pursuit of justice.

He cautioned against complacency and excessive caution, warning that such an approach could lead to the erosion of national rights and Armenia’s independence. Recalling the unified resistance of Armenians in the fifth century under Vardan Mamikonian and Ghhevond Yerets, he urged Armenians today to echo the same determination.

Aram I stressed that effective collaboration between Armenia and the Diaspora is a foundational pillar for the Armenian Cause. Yet, he lamented the absence of a unified strategy to harmonize their positions.

He asserted: “It is both possible and imperative to align national and state interests, rather than separate or oppose them; to balance roles between Armenia and the Diaspora, rather than distancing one from the other. Clear delineation of roles and division of work is necessary to fully and effectively utilize the potential of our nation.”

He warned that failure to act on these imperatives could lead Armenia toward perilous horizons and the nation into fragmentation, signs of which are already visible.

Aram I also emphasized the importance of shifting the Armenian Cause into political and legal spheres, asserting that these must now become its focal points. While acknowledging the vast academic and advocacy work done over decades, he argued that legal and political engagement is now essential, especially in a world where law and justice are often absent.

He stressed realism, vigilance, and strategic organization in adapting to a changing global landscape.

Highlighting the unifying power of national cohesion, he stated: “The history of nations shows that politics has no eternal friends—only interests. Today, Armenians have no real allies. Our only true ally is ourselves—our unity, our Armenia-Diaspora cooperation.”

Aram I expressed concern over growing internal divisions—within Armenia, the Diaspora, and across political and communal lines—which he said have weakened collective faith and undermined shared resolve.

In conclusion, he warned: “As a nation, we are heading in the wrong and dangerous direction. We must awaken, unite, and harness our collective strength for the empowerment of Armenia and the advancement of our rights.”

He ended with a call to all Armenians: “Beloved Armenian people, in Armenia and across the Diaspora—there is no other way. Unite and bring together our people. This is the message of our canonized martyrs. Let us heed their call and, with faith, renew our lives and our struggle—now and always, and forevermore. Amen.”
