US AMBASSADOR IN YEREVAN THINKS CONGRESS CAN RECONSIDER AMOUNT OF AID TO ARMENIA IN 2002 PROPOSED BY THE WHITE HOUSE
Commenting the initiative of Washington Administration to curtail the amount of the American aid to Armenia in 2002, US Ambassador in Yerevan John Ordway stated in the interview to the Public Television Company of Armenia that the bill submitted by the White House provides for curtailing aid to nearly all newly independent states. At the same time he noted that per capita aid to Armenia would remain one of the highest in the world. The same happened last year when the Administration suggested rendering 70 million US dollars to Yerevan, but the lawmakers increased the sum to 90 million. This time the Government again suggests not going beyond 70 million. John Ordway noted that Congressmen could increase one part of the budget at the expense of the other. Let us note that the 2003 foreign aid bill submitted to Congress by the Administration provides for increasing the amount of US aid to Azerbaijan. The US Government suggests giving 46 million to the country in 2003, while the sum made 43 million this year. The White House proposes to give equal military financing both to Armenia and Azerbaijan - three million to each. Besides, Armenia will get additional 400 thousand dollars for military training.
