Eduard Sharmazanov: Azerbaijani President’s double-faced attitude will only antagonize Iranian people![]() November 29, 2010 - 14:35 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia does not have to coordinate its interstate relations with the third party, Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group secretary Eduard Sharmazanov said, commenting on U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte’s statement. As he stressed in a conversation with PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, “Armenia does not conduct pro-Eastern or pro-Western policy, the country’s authorities are adhering to pro-Armenian policy.” Sharmazanov characterized President Sargsyan’s policy as well-balanced, noting that the country in interested in establishment of normal relations between the U.S. and Iran. Dwelling on Ilham Aliyev’s confession on Azerbaijan’s having rather strained relations with Iran, Sharmazanov noted that the relations between the two states were never exemplary. “Azerbaijani President’s double-faced attitude will only antagonize Iranian people,” he stressed. A secret cable citing the text of a letter from U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte to the Armenian President expressed concern about the reported sale of weapons to Iran, stating "Notwithstanding the close relationship between our countries, neither the Administration nor the U.S. Congress can overlook this case." According to WikiLeaks website, which made public over more than 250,000 U.S diplomatic cables, the letter went on to note that there would be consideration “whether there is a basis for the imposition of U.S. sanctions.” ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution.
