Islamization of Javakhk dire threat for Armenia, expert says

Islamization of Javakhk is a dire threat for Armenia, according to expert Vahe Sargsyan.

As he told journalists on March 12, the Armenian population is endangered by Azerbaijan and Azeri-inhabited regions of Georgia, as well as by Turkey and Ajaria.

“The number of Azerbaijanis in Georgia grew to reach 300-400 thousand by the end of the 20th century, making the Islamic element increase dramatically,” Sargsyan said, adding that the return of Meskhetian Turks as well as Turkish investments also worsen the situation.

For his part, Javakhk-based expert Ghevond Mkrtchyan emphasized that preservation of the Armenian-inhabited region is one of the most important factors for maintenance of Armenian state system. “If there are no Armenians left in Javakhk, Armenia will have to deploy troops to guard the border with Georgia,” he said.
