Olympic champion, weightlifter Yuri Vardanyan was diagnosed with embolism, a reliable source told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

During a surgery for lower leg reconstruction at Erebuni medical center, the sportsman's heart stopped. Doctors had to discontinue the operation to proceed to open-chest massage.

Vardanyan is currently in a coma.

In October 2010, Vardanyan was injured in a car accident on Yerevan-Gyumri motorway and underwent a surgery in Nairi medical center.
