EUROUNION IS NOT GOING TO VIE WITH RUSSIA AND THE USA IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS, GREEK DIPLOMAT STRESSED

PanARMENIAN.Net - YEREVAN, February 16. /Mediamax/. On Feb. 20 the "Three" of the European Union (EU), headed by EU Acting chairperson, Foreign Minister of Sweden Anna Lindh, will visit Yerevan. As the Ambassador of Greece to Armenia Panayotis Zografos said today at a press conference in Yerevan, Armenia will be the first country in the region which the top European delegation will visit.

The Greek diplomat attached special importance to the visit and stressed the significance of the region in EU foreign policy after Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia obtained independence. The visit of the "Three", according to the ambassador, will allow the consolidation of EU position in the South Caucasus.

Mr. Zografos said that for the past 10 years the EU financial assistance to the countries of the region exceeded 1 billion Euro. The EU is also going to allocate 3 million Euro for the legal preparation of Iran-Armenia gas pipeline construction.

However, the EU does not strive to rival with Russia and the USA in the South Caucasian region, Zografos stressed. -0-
