Former Iranian president disallowed from visiting his children in Europe

PanARMENIAN.Net - Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami has been barred from leaving the country, an Iranian website reported Tuesday July 26, according to dpa.

The website Jahan-News quoted unnamed official sources as saying that Khatami had planned to visit his children in Europe and attend a political seminar in Ireland.

But local authorities did not allow him to leave the country, the source told the website without disclosing any further details.

The report by the website has not yet been confirmed officially.

Khatami is a fierce opponent of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and has not yet acknowledged his re-election, citing alleged fraud in the June 2009 election.

Khatami, president from 1997 to 2005, was also prohibited in April last year from leaving the country to attend a nuclear disarmament conference in Japan.
