ARMENIA SHOULDN'T BLINDLY BELIEVE THE DECLARATIONS OF BAKU ABOUT ITS READINESS FOR COMPROMISES, DECLARED THE EX-COUNSELOR OF THE PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA ON FOREIGN POLICY

PanARMENIAN.Net - 21.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. "Armenia shouldn't blindly believe the declarations of Baku about its readiness for compromises in the Karabakh conflict settlement", declared today in the interview to MEDIAMAX the leader of the Democratic party, the ex-counselor of the president of Armenia on foreign policy, Aram Sarkisian.

"Armenia is recently speaking as a country looking for compromises, while anti-Armenian propaganda does not stop in Azerbaijan", states Mr. Sarkisian. According to him, thus, the public opinion of Azerbaijan is not able to get used to the fact that the Karabakh conflict issue can be solved by mutual concessions.

Commenting upon the direct talks of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Mr. Sarkisian noted that there is an impression that concrete models of settlement are not being worked out during these contacts, but "a ground is prepared" to renew negotiations within the framework of OSCE Minsk group.

According to Mr. Sarkisian, the Azeri president, as compared to his regional colleagues, is in an unfavorable position, as Europe does not recognize him as a democratic leader.

"Armenia must work out a concept of national security and exclude the question of territorial exchange as a variant of the Karabakh issue solution", declared Mr. Sarkisian. -0-
