Arthur Alexanyan wins champion’s title at Junior World Wrestling Championships

Wrestling: on July 21, Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestler Arthur Alexanyan (weight class 84kg) won the champion’s title at Junior World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Earlier, Armenia’s Alexan Mikaelyan (weight class 60kg) won bronze.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Box: WBO, WIBF and WBA female flyweight champ Susi Kentikian retained her titles when her fight against Arely Mucino was declared a No Contest 27 seconds into the third round when Kentikian suffered a cut on her scalp after an accidental clash of heads. Mucino’s busy style seemed to give Kentikian plenty of problems and after two scored rounds the fight was even on two cards while the third card read 20-18 for Mucino.

On October 2, in the capital city/state of Monaco, Abraham and Froch will meet at the Chapiteau de l’Espace Fontvieille for their pivotal Group Stage 3 match up in the boxing tournament that has ignited the industry.

“I cannot wait to get back in the ring,” said Abraham. “I am thrilled that the date and the venue have been set. I must admit that the disqualification against Dirrell still haunts me. Only a victory over Froch can put my mind at rest,” noted Abraham.

On July 19, Arthur Abraham welcomed a special guest when German Chancellor Angela Merkel stopped by to visit the renowned training facilities in Kienbaum. “I gave her a pair of mini gloves, which she promised to keep in a very special place inside her office,” said Arthur Abraham. “I hope the gloves bring her luck – in politics, you sometimes have to box your way through. It was a great honor to meet the Chancellor. We spoke about a lot of interesting things,” noted Abraham.

Sambo: international Youth Sambo Tournament to honor Soviet Union Hero, pilot Nelson Stepanyan, was completed in Yerevan. The tournament hosted 143 sportsmen from Armenia, NKR, Russia and Georgia.

The Armenian team won the tournament with the total of 30 medals, including 7gold, 5 silver and 18 bronze. Russian team with 12 medals became a runner up, followed by Georgia (9 medals. The tournament was organized by the RA Sambo Federation and Rossotrudnichestvo representation in Armenia, in association with the RA National Olympic Committee.

Chess: On July 19, Lake Sevan international chess tournament was completed in Martuni. Arman Pashikyan won the tournament with six points, followed by Petrosyan - 6 points, and Matlakov – 5 points. Another international chess tournament was completed in Benasque, Spain. Hrant Melkumyan scored 8 points out of 10 possible and was the third among 480 participants. He was only half a point behind the tournament winner.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Sargsyan won the 2nd place at an international chess tournament in Rethymno of Greece. The chess player gained 7 points out of 9 possible.

Football: on July 21, Yerevan’s Vazgen Sargsyan stadium hosted a Pyunik vs. Partisan match. Pyunik was beaten 0:1 by Partisan in the return match for Champions League second round qualifier. As a result of 2 games, Partisan won a 4:1 victory to qualify for the next round, while Pyunik dropped out of the second round of Champions League.

Chief Coach of Pyunik Vardan Minasyan said that his team did not manage to display its all abilities in the two matches. “All members of the team should do their utmost to celebrate victory in such matches and not 7-8 sportsmen, like at Armenia’s championship,” noted Minasyan.

On July 22, the return match of Armenian FC Mika and Rabotnicki (Macedonia) in the second qualification round of Europa League ended in a bare draw. However, as a result of 2 games, Rabotnicki qualified for the next round 1:0.

Handball: Vanadzor will host two handball tournaments in September - RA Prime Minister's Men Cup and Armenia's Youth (under 16) Championship scheduled for September 1-5.

The Prime Minister’s Cup will bring together sportsmen from Armenia, Iran, Georgia and Belarus, with representatives of the European Handball Federation watching.

Olympic Games: the International Olympic Committee has provided Armenia's swimmers Anahit Barseghyan and Sergey Pevnev with the opportunity to participate in Singapore Olympic Games. Barseghyan will compete in the 50m and 100m backstroke, while Pevnev – in the 50m and 100m freestyle. Thus, 14 Armenian sportsmen will participate in Singapore Olympic Games due August 14-26.

On July 17, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov and Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation between the two countries’ Olympic Committees.

Zhukov noted that his visit is basically aimed at establishing closer ties for sports development. “We should use the opportunities offered by Armenia. Besides, we are ready to welcome Armenian sportsmen in Russia for joint trainings and offer the experience of our coaches,” said Zhukov.

He added that Armenia made an interesting offer on implementation of an investment project for creation of a sports complex at Lake Sevan.

Boat racing: Armenian youth boat racing team will participate in Under 18 World Championship in Czechia.

Armenian sportsmen Tigran Grigoryan and Gevorg Adamyan will perform at the championship, head coach of Armenian boat racing team Vardan Adamyan told PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

As he also noted, European Championship due September 2-15 in Portugal will host Markar Sargsyan and Sargis Karabaghtsyan.
