The second attempt at reviving rapprochement process, inopportunely named Zurich-2, can occur after parliamentary elections in Turkey

Ankara, who is to blame for ratification failure, feels the need to justify itself in the eyes of international community.

The closer is the approach of 1-year anniversary of signing Armenian-Turkish rapprochement Protocols and opening of border, the more often announcements like Zurich -2 appear in Turkish and Armenian media. Turkey’s actions are understandable, with Ankara, who is to blame for ratification failure, feeling the need to justify itself in the eyes of international community.

PanARMENIAN.Net - “Rumors of a certain Zurich -2 are nothing but misinformation, carried on by Armenian media. Clearly, no progress in Armenia-Turkey relations is envisaged till 2012. This is not even worth commenting,” an expert, wishing to keep his identity secret, told PanARMENIAN.Net

Diplomatic circles in Armenia also believe such a development of events unlikely, characterizing both sides’ positions as irreconcilable. Given ill-considered steps of Turkish politicians, such as praying namaz on the ruins of Ani or belated establishment of a cross on dome of Holy Cross Church, it’s obvious Turkish media is circulating misinformation hoping for the Armenian side to continue disseminating it. Not to mention repeated statements by Turkish authorities, aiming to link Karabakh conflict with Armenia-Turkey relations, which suggest Turkey’s reluctance to find solution to both issues.

The second attempt at reviving rapprochement process, so inopportunely named Zurich-2, can occur after parliamentary elections in Turkey. 2012 elections in Armenia won’t affect the process, as in this case Armenian political elite is unanimous – no one will sign peace document with Ankara.
