Murray, who lost to Federer in this summer's Wimbledon final, is ranked four in the world but is the third seed at Flushing Meadows following the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal because of a knee injury. Defending champion Novak Djokovic is the second seed with Nadal's Spanish countryman David Ferrer No 4 as the US Open follows the latest ATP World Tour rankings to determine the men's singles seeds.
