The US soldier was last month found guilty of several charges, including espionage, but was cleared of the more serious crime of "aiding the enemy". The sentence was handed down today (August 21) by Colonel Denise Lind, who had presided over the eight-week court martial in Fort Meade, Maryland. Prosecutors had argued that Manning should serve a minimum of 60 years, though the defence had called for a maximum of 25 years. Manning must serve a third of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. He has already served three-and-a-half years awaiting trial. He has also been dishonourably discharged from the army and must forfeit some of his pay.
