Mongrel Intl. acquires “Maudie” Sally Hawkins period romancer

PanARMENIAN.Net - Mongrel Intl., the new acquisition division of Canadian shingle Mongrel Media, has picked up worldwide sales rights to Aisling Walsh’s period romancer “Maudie” starring Sally Hawkins, with plans to shop the film around at this year’s Cannes Film Market, Variety said.

“We have specialized in bringing carefully curated, culturally relevant, story-driven and beautifully crafted films to Canadian audiences,” says Mongrel founder and president Hussain Amarshi. “And with Mongrel Intl., we plan to do that same for the world market.”

“Maudie,” a Canadian-Irish co-production, marks the first pickup for Mongrel Intl. The film is set to begin lensing in Newfoundland in July.

Based on a true story, “Maudie” is set in Nova Scotia in the 1950s and ’60s centered on the reclusive Everett Lewis, who ultimately falls in love with the quiet, yet determined housekeeper he’s hired. The film is from a script by Canada native Sherry White, with Bob Cooper, Mary Young and Susan Mullen producing.

“I think this is a very special project for me, because not only is the material and talent so compelling, but it’s a chance for me to return home after many years,” Cooper said.
