Defense Minister sees no need to apply to CSTO over border tensions

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s Defense Minister sees no need to request the CSTO’s assistance in resolving border tensions with Azerbaijan, according to Armenia Today.

However, as Seyran Ohanyan told reporters, to assist with the situation, the CSTO might issue a statement naming actual perpetrators behind violations of ceasefire.

Commenting on soaring instances of Azeri shelling at the border with Armenia and violations at the line of contact, the official noted that though always tense, current situation might be cased by political reasons, Azerbaijan’s marking the Army Day as one of them.

“Armenian forces always give adequate respond to Azeri actions, taking steps to thwart the attacks,” Ohanyan concluded.

Azerbaijan opened fire at the villages of Barekamavan, Aygepar and Movses in Armenia’s Tavush province Friday, June 27.

Aygepar village also came under Azerbaijani fire last night. Shots were fired from large-caliber weapons. The village gas pipeline was damaged. Shootings continued in Movses village from 10:15 pm.
