Dutch parliament adopts motions on Azerbaijan's violence against Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Dutch Parliament on Tuesday, November 23 adopted two motions regarding human rights and Armenian prisoners of war in Azerbaijan, the Federation of Armenian Organisations in The Netherlands reports.

The motions were submitted last week by MP Don Ceder of Christian Union Faction.

The first motion relates to an independent investigation of facts in the Azerbaijan-Armenian conflict, while the second one stresses to the lack of human rights, freedom of expression, press freedom, as well as the detention of Armenian POWs in Azerbaijan, telling the government to ensure that those facts have consequences for Azerbaijan.

The first motion came after Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Knapen reacted in a defensive way to questions from MPs Agnes Mulder (CDA), Don Ceder (CU) and Kees van der Staaij (SGP), regarding Azerbaijan's latest violence on the border with Armenia. The Minister said that he had no information whatsoever about what had exactly happened as both countries were giving contrary information, and that the Netherlands can only underline the urgency that the parties return to negotiation table under the auspices of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. The motion requests the Dutch government to work in the EU towards an independent investigation of the facts of the conflict.

In the second motion, Ceder, referring to the principles for the implementation of the European Neighbourhood Instrument “More for More and Less for Less”, demands the government to oversee in the negotiations within the Eastern Partnership that Azerbaijan bear consequences for the lack of human rights, freedom of expression, press freedom, as well as the ongoing detention of Armenian PoWs in Azerbaijan.
