Karabakh bakeries make small pies due to lack of flour

PanARMENIAN.Net - Arshak Abrahamyan, a member of the public movement Artsakh Security and Development Front in Nagorno-Karabakh, has published photos of what appear to be small pies that he managed to buy on Friday, September 15 after queueing for bread for several hours.

"In Stepanakert, this is considered pirozhki (small pies - Ed.) and is sold for 200 drams per piece. I stood in line all night yesterday, and since they had allocated less flour to the bakery had been allocated less amount of flour, they had decided to at least bake "pirozhki". I got these from them," Abrahamyan said.

Since December 12, 2022, the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia - the Lachin Corridor - has been blocked by Azerbaijan. Baku tightened the blockade on June 15, 2023, banning emergency relief supplies that were carried out by Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross through the sole road connecting Karabakh to Armenia and the outside world. The move aggravated the shortages of food, medicine and other essential items experienced by the region’s population. On August 15, Karabakh Human Rights Defender’s office reported the first case of death from starvation.
