French envoy hails Armenia as island of freedom![]() May 5, 2025 - 16:42 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia is emerging as a regional stronghold of press freedom, according to French Ambassador Olivier Decottignies. In a post on his X microblog, the ambassador commended Armenia’s rise in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters Without Borders. “Armenia is an island of freedom in the region,” he wrote. “Ranked 34th among 180 countries, Armenia continues to progress and asserts itself as a beacon of liberty. By supporting Armenia, we support a democratic nation that shares our values.” The 2025 index shows Armenia leading the region in press freedom, having climbed nine spots compared to 2024. Georgia fell 11 places to 114th, Azerbaijan dropped three positions to 167th, Turkey slipped one spot to 159th, Iran remains at 176th, and Russia declined nine places to 171st. ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took to social media to thank his Lithuanian counterpart for the contribution.
