Baku court reviews 1993 UN resolutions in Artsakh leaders trial

PanARMENIAN.Net - On May 16, the military court in Baku continued proceedings against former political and military leaders of Artsakh, including Arayik Harutyunyan, Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, Davit Ishkhanyan, and others. The defendants face charges such as “crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, and terrorism.”

During the session, the court examined 1993 United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884, which addressed the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. These resolutions called for the immediate cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of occupying forces from Azerbaijani territories .

The Azerbaijani prosecution presented these resolutions to support claims that “Armenian forces occupied Azerbaijani territories during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War.” The court also reviewed reports from international organizations alleging violations of international humanitarian law by Armenian forces.

Тhe trials are widely perceived as politically motivated, aiming to legitimize Azerbaijan's narrative of the conflict and shift responsibility onto Armenia. The proceedings lack impartiality and violate international legal standards.

The trial is set to continue on May 19.
