New biometric passports to feature redesigned colors, higher security![]() May 22, 2025 - 15:06 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Starting in the second half of 2026, Armenia will implement a new biometric system, providing citizens with updated-format passports and ID cards. These documents will feature new designs and colors, aligned with enhanced security standards, according to Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan, Armenpress reports. “At present, we are actively discussing the design and concept with our private partner. We’re reviewing certain elements that will reflect the identity of the Republic of Armenia. This document should be highly symbolic for our citizens, so every detail must be carefully chosen. Once we finalize all design elements, the private partner will proceed with the next steps,” said Sargsyan. Changes will affect not only the visual aspects but also security features, which are currently under review. While the exact color is still undecided, the minister noted that certain colors, like black, are considered unfavorable from a security standpoint. A contract has already been signed with a selected private company, chosen through a special tender, to manage passport services. This company will establish 23 branches across the country. “Currently, there are around 45 territorial passport units. It may seem at first that reducing them to 23 might complicate access, but the opposite is true—we are streamlining the process to minimize citizen interactions with passport offices. Any data that can be collected electronically will be handled that way. Citizens will only need to visit a passport office once,” the minister explained. The ministry has explored innovative service methods with its private partners. “We are initially planning to offer these services in two major malls in Yerevan. This will not only enhance access but also shift the cultural perception around such services. Considering the high foot traffic in these locations, we expect to deliver services faster and more efficiently,” Sargsyan added. In Yerevan, a service center will operate until 10:00 PM, while regional offices will function from 09:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Additionally, mobile service units will be deployed. According to the schedule, production of the biometric documents will begin in the second half of 2026. ![]() ![]() Yerevan has dismissed Turkey’s demand to shut down the Armenian nuclear power plant as “inappropriate”.
