Azerbaijan signs $4.6 billion deal for 40 JF-17s

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijan has significantly increased its order of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan, expanding from 16 to 40 aircraft. This major acquisition represents the largest export in the history of Pakistan’s defense industry.

The $4.6 billion deal, which also includes a $2 billion investment package, has been officially approved by the Pakistani government. With this agreement, Azerbaijan has become the biggest foreign buyer of the JF-17 series, surpassing Nigeria and Myanmar, according to Defenсe Industry Europe.

The JF-17 Thunder is a joint development between Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. It is considered an affordable solution offering modern air combat capabilities. Azerbaijan will acquire the Block III variant, the latest and most advanced model equipped with an AESA radar, upgraded avionics, and the capability to use long-range PL-15 and PL-10 air-to-air missiles.

First flown in 2019, the JF-17 Block III introduces significant technological upgrades over earlier versions. Military analysts suggest Azerbaijan may also integrate Turkish Gokdogan and Bozdogan missiles, indicating growing defense cooperation between Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.

The jets will also be outfitted with ASELPOD targeting systems, placing Azerbaijan among the few countries using this technology alongside Pakistan and Nigeria. This expanded purchase underscores Azerbaijan’s efforts to modernize its air force.

Pakistan supported Azerbaijan during the 44-day war in 2020. Since then, the two nations, with Turkey’s involvement, have held multiple joint military exercises. Pakistan’s Prime Minister even attended the airport opening in Lachin alongside Azerbaijani and Turkish leaders.
