Armenia backs UN Gaza ceasefire resolution

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to the UN press office.

The resolution received support from 149 countries, while 12 voted against and 19 abstained. The United States and Israel were among those who opposed the resolution, alongside Argentina, Fiji, Hungary, Paraguay, and others, Sputnik Armenia reported.

Countries that abstained included Georgia, India, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Ethiopia, and several others.

Although General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant political and moral weight.

General Assembly President Dennis Francis emphasized that the horrors of the 20-month war in Gaza must come to an end. He sharply criticized the UN Security Council for failing to fulfill its core responsibilities.

Francis also stated that the current situation is unacceptable, with civilians deprived of food, water, and medicine, and hostages still being held. He called for immediate international intervention.

On June 4, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution demanding the immediate, unconditional, and permanent cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages by Hamas, and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza. The U.S. vetoed the document, while the other 14 members supported it.
