Kremlin hopes Armenia-Azerbaijan tensions won't reignite

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow hopes there will be no renewed escalation between Armenia and Azerbaijan and expressed confidence that both countries are nearing completion of a peace treaty. His comments were reported by RIA Novosti.

“This (tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan) is something we hope does not happen. The countries are very close to concluding the work on a peace treaty. And we hope this effort will soon take final shape. This treaty is critically necessary for maintaining stability and security in the region,” Peskov told reporters.

He added that Russia is prepared to “do everything necessary to support this process” if needed.

On March 13, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry announced it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals regarding two previously unresolved articles, stating that the peace treaty was ready for signing. Yerevan indicated its readiness to begin consultations on the date and location of the signing. However, Baku later introduced new preconditions and declared it was too early to discuss the timeline.

The draft peace treaty consists of 17 provisions, of which 15 were previously agreed upon. The two contentious points involved mutual renunciation of international claims and the deployment of foreign representatives along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
