Kallas says democratic values must be protected in Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, commended the Armenian government's “commitment to democratic reforms” during her meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan. She emphasized that these values are crucial not only domestically but also as a foundation for international partnerships.

Kallas stressed the importance of defending these principles, particularly “in the face of hybrid threats, disinformation, and attempts to interfere in Armenia's internal affairs.” She affirmed that the EU stands ready to support Armenia in strengthening its resilience.

Prime Minister Pashinyan expressed gratitude for the EU’s consistent support and reiterated his administration’s dedication to advancing democracy and peace as core priorities.

The senior EU official noted that Armenia and the European Union are closer than ever. According to her, the EU is fully prepared to deepen cooperation across all areas.

Kallas highlighted the significance of the Armenia-EU-U.S. trilateral statement signed in Brussels on April 5, 2024, calling it a pivotal step in strengthening strategic cooperation between Armenia and its Western partners. She noted that the document laid the foundation for a new level of political dialogue.

The meeting also addressed issues related to visa liberalization, with both sides acknowledging notable progress in recent months.

Additionally, the parties exchanged views on regional developments and the peace process. Kallas welcomed the positive momentum in Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations, stating that it could pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region.

Earlier, in a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Kaja Kallas emphasized the EU’s strong interest in seeing the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement finalized swiftly and signed as soon as possible.
