WCC voices concern over actions targeting Armenian Church

PanARMENIAN.Net - The World Council of Churches has expressed concern over recent developments surrounding the Armenian Apostolic Church. The statement was released on behalf of the Council's General Secretary, Jerry Pillay.

"The World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses its deep concern regarding recent developments in Armenia related to the Armenian Apostolic Church, including actions taken by law enforcement at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the arrests of senior clergy. The Armenian Apostolic Church holds a unique and respected place in the spiritual, cultural, and historical life of the Armenian people. It is also a vital and irreplaceable member of the global Christian family, contributing deeply to the ecumenical movement," reads the statement, as reported by Factor.am .

According to the Council, reports of force being used at sacred sites and the arrests of clergy raise serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom, the sanctity of worship, and the autonomy of religious institutions.

"We also recognize the impact that public rhetoric can have during times of regional tension. Language perceived as hostile or dismissive toward religious communities risks deepening social divisions when unity and mutual understanding are most needed," the statement continues.

In this context, the WCC urges the Armenian authorities to ensure the safety, dignity, and legal rights of religious leaders and institutions, avoid actions or rhetoric that could be interpreted as targeting religious entities or inciting antagonism, uphold the principles of free religious expression and the rule of law, and promote open and constructive dialogue between state authorities and religious communities.

"The World Council of Churches stands in solidarity with the Armenian Apostolic Church, whose historic witness and unwavering role have long supported the spiritual life and resilience of the Armenian nation and the global Christian fellowship. We continue to pray for wisdom and discernment among Armenia’s leaders, the well-being of clergy and believers, and a resolution rooted in justice, peace, and mutual respect. At this critical moment, we call on all stakeholders to act with responsibility, sensitivity, and a shared commitment to dignity, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence," the statement concludes.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recently wrote on Facebook that “the House of Christ has been seized by an immoral, anti-national group and must be liberated,” adding that he will “lead this liberation.”
