NATO seeks influence in South Caucasus, says Zakharova

PanARMENIAN.Net - Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned that NATO aims to strengthen its foothold in the South Caucasus to exploit regional resources amid geopolitical conflict with Moscow.

According to Zakharova, the North Atlantic Alliance, as a bloc and through individual member states, has for years been trying to entrench itself in the South Caucasus. “What is the Alliance’s goal? I believe it’s obvious—using the potential and resources of countries in the region to serve the interests of the collective West, particularly within the context of a geopolitical confrontation with our country,” she stated.

She also expressed hope that “Armenia and Azerbaijan understand the risks of deepening cooperation with NATO,” as reported by TASS.

Zakharova further emphasized that the West does not seek equal partnerships in the post-Soviet space. Instead, she said, it wants “to extract resources, set countries against each other, inflame tensions, and act like a classic colonial power and conqueror, an imperialist.”

“Everyone knows how this ends—wherever the North Atlantic Alliance appears, conflicts escalate, military tension rises, and words like peace and stability are forgotten,” she concluded.
