Shahramanyan hopes U.S. President will help on POW issue

PanARMENIAN.Net - President of Artsakh Samvel Shahramanyan addressed the issue of returning military-political leaders and prisoners held in Baku during Artsakh Independence Day event at Yerablur.

He stated that they expect support from international partners, according to Aysor.am .

“Recently, the U.S. President said he would personally ask the President of Azerbaijan, and we hope he will follow through,” Shahramanyan said.

He emphasized that the Armenian authorities play a significant role in the process.

“They assure us that consistent work is being carried out in this direction, but until there is a visible result, it cannot be considered sufficient,” he added.

In September 2023, after a nine-month blockade and the ethnic cleansing of the entire Armenian population of Artsakh, Azerbaijan captured former presidents Arkadi Ghukasyan, Bako Sahakyan, and Arayik Harutyunyan, as well as former State Minister Ruben Vardanyan, Foreign Minister Davit Babayan, and several other former leaders. The fabricated charges against them could lead to life sentences. On January 17, a sham trial began in Baku against the Artsakh leadership.
