Vardanyan family calls verdict a sentence against Armenians

PanARMENIAN.Net - The family of businessman and philanthropist, former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan, said the verdict delivered by a Baku court resembles “a sentence against the Armenian people as a whole.”

In a statement, the family called on international leaders to take all appropriate measures, in line with international law, to ensure the release and protection of the rights of Vardanyan and other Armenian detainees.

“The decision of Azerbaijan’s military court is appalling, though not unexpected. From the moment of his unlawful arrest 874 days ago, it was clear that the outcome of this process had been predetermined. Throughout this time, no evidence substantiating any of the charges brought against him has been presented.

Ruben was deprived of the fundamental guarantees of a fair trial, including access to legal defense, the opportunity to communicate with an international lawyer, and the participation of independent media in the proceedings. The hearings were held behind closed doors and under conditions incompatible with international law and, even under Azerbaijani legislation, with standards of a fair trial.

Despite attempts to discredit Ruben’s reputation as a humanitarian, philanthropist and social entrepreneur, the support of governments, civil society leaders and international experts gives strength and hope to our family.

All those who personally know Ruben or have interacted with him understand the absurdity and groundlessness of the accusations against him.

This is not merely the trial of Ruben Vardanyan and other Armenian prisoners; it resembles a verdict against the Armenian people as a whole.

We will continue our efforts to secure his release and the release of other Armenian prisoners,” the statement reads.

The Baku Military Court sentenced Ruben Vardanyan to 20 years in prison on charges his supporters describe as fabricated.
